Overview:
Are you prowling for a new mountain to tackle within the NY metro area? Tired of the maddening mania of Breakneck Ridge? Look no further than Schunemunk Mountain in the West Hudson Highlands of NY! Around 1.5 hours outside of NYC, you'll find this glorious nearly 1,700 ft formation in all of its pitch piney-conglomerate rocked wonder.
This 6.4 mile lollipop loop will take you from the Taylor Road trailhead in Blooming Grove, NY up the eastern ridgeline of this double-ridgelined mountain. You'll pass through sprawling fields of grasses and wildflowers, bask in shaded hardwood forests, and steeply climb to open rock faces spreckled with pitch pines (yes, spreckled).
With unobstructed views of the Hudson Valley and beyond, this ridgeline trek will undoubtedly fill your heart with wonder and amazement :D #magical. In addition to expansive views, Schunemunk's unique geology offers exceptional rock formations like the monstrous (in a good way) Megaliths. These bedrock boulders mark this hikes midway point as well as a delightful spot for lunch!
